The FY18 DoD Peer Reviewed Alzheimer's New Investigator Research Award (PRARP NIRA) aims to support early-career researchers focused on innovative studies or technologies related to traumatic brain injury (TBI) and Alzheimer's Disease/Alzheimer's Disease Related Dementias (AD/ADRD). The goal is to benefit military, Veteran, and civilian communities.
Eligible applicants are those who are within three years of their first independent faculty position and demonstrate experience in TBI and AD/ADRD research. While preliminary data is encouraged, it is not mandatory. The maximum budget for this award is $225,000 over a performance period of up to three years.
Applicants need to address specific overarching challenges, which include:
1. Limited research resources and clinical studies examining the link between TBI and subsequent AD/ADRD. 2. The need for diagnostic technologies and devices to detect or predict the progression to AD/ADRD post-TBI. 3. Enhancements to quality of life for individuals affected by TBI and AD/ADRD. 4. Support for caregivers managing the effects of TBI and AD/ADRD. 5. Increased epidemiological research regarding TBI's impact on AD/ADRD.
Additionally, applications should focus on at least one of the specific focus areas like mechanisms of pathogenesis, biomarkers development, caregiver support, or non-pharmacological interventions. Research proposals that lie outside these focus areas may be considered if a strong rationale is provided.
